“If you remove the English Army tomorrow and hoist the green flag over Dublin Castle, unless you set about the organization of the Socialist Republic your efforts will be in vain. England will still rule you. She would rule you through her capitalists, through her landlords, through her financiers, through the whole array of commercial and individualist institutions she has planted in this country and watered with the tears of our mothers and the blood of our martyrs.” ― James Connolly
James Connolly was executed by the British army after taking part in the failed Easter Rising in Dublin in 1916. Many on the left could not understand why a revolutionary socialist, and thus avowed internationalist, would support such a nationalist uprising, and one led by conservative and for the most part deeply religious men.
In this talk Martin Crick will explore Connolly’s life and work, and the development of his socialist thinking, particularly in relation to the growing nationalist movements seeking to throw off the shackles of British imperialism.
Martin Crick an historian, rugby league fanatic, and serves on the executive committee of the Canterbury Socialist Society. He is also editor of the New Zealand Federation of Socialist Societies’ periodical The Commonweal.
