“Wherever capitalism appears, in pursuit of its mission of exploitation, there will Socialism, fertilized by misery, watered by tears, and vitalized by agitation be also found, unfurling its class-struggle banner and proclaiming its mission of emancipation.”
-Eugene V. Debs, The American Movement, 1898.

Politics in the United States today can be difficult to untangle. Now that Trump has gone, what happened to the energy around ‘Trumpism’? Are things back to the pre-Trump neoliberal ‘normal’, or does Biden represent a more significant shift? How do the various sectors of capital align with the major parties and political trends in the United States?
Conversely, what has been the impact of current movement politics: Black Lives Matter, ‘Me Too’, indigenous struggles against oil pipelines, and the resurgence of nominally socialist ideas and organisations? This talk will examine some of the debates and analysis on offer from a seemingly growing US Socialist Left.
Canterbury Socialist Society are pleased to welcome a guest lecture from Josh On. Josh is from Christchurch but has lived much of his adult life in America, and been a socialist activist there for the last two decades.
All are welcome to attend. Doors from 7pm for a 7.30pm start.
